Signs and Symptoms of Depression

There are many different signs and symptoms of depression, these symptoms may vary from person to person and are experienced by everyone from occasionally. If a few of these signs and symptoms persist daily for a period of two weeks or more, then you may be depressed and should seek help immediately.

Many people are unaware of the signs and symptoms of depression and others simply never search for help. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 17 million people in the US suffer from depression yearly. Many depression cases can be successfully treated but are left undiagnosed and untreated due to persons ignoring the signs and symptoms. Depression is a serious condition and can negatively affect your life in large ways. Therefore it is crucial to take note of if you experience any signs and symptoms of depression and how long they persist for. The earlier you seek help the more likely your treatment is to be successful.

The following are some common signs and symptoms of depression:

  1. Prolonged and unwarranted sadness
  2. Loss of interest in normal and pleasurable activities
  3. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and emptiness
  4. Unexplained body pains and aches
  5. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors
  6. Loss of appetite
  7. Difficulty sleeping
  8. Lack of motivation
  9. High levels of procrastination
  10. Withdrawal from friends and family
  11. Feeling tired all the time

If you experience one or more of the above symptoms and signs daily for a period of two weeks or more then you may be depressed and are advised to seek help immediately.
